Joey Derse Artist Interview
Artist Joey Derse talks about selling prints and publishing art instruction books in this interview.
Joey Derse Bio
Joey Derse is an artist who comes from a family of artists. He was brought up close to the Big South Fork National Park in Kentucky and drew early inspiration from the beauty surrounding him, creating his first artwork at the age of just four.
In college he assisted with teaching the use of sculptor tools, which helped his conceptual looking at three dimensional arts. This, in turn, gave him ideas to incorporate these themes into his paintings and his art has slowly evolved to include this third dimension.
Incorporating zigzags, continuous lines, straight lines, moon shapes, and triangles, Joey’s work includes a certain mathematical order and he also focuses on adding chromatic colors and texture to obtain complexity.
Joey’s art has been featured in exhibitions from Portland to Chicago and has seen his work included in an articles, e.g. (an example of is WBKO News).
Please tell us your work.
I paint mostly nature scenes in a post impressionistic style, using oil paints as my primary medium, but have done some work in acrylics.
Please tell us about your art?
I paint mostly nature scenes in a post impressionistic style, using oil paints as my primary medium, but have done some work in acrylics.
What is your art background?
I have been painting on and off since 1994, when unable to paint I would draw. I received an Art degree at Berea College, in Kentucky, where I received formally trained. I also received a business certificate for Web Development at Black Hawk College, in Illinois.
You sell your art as Giclees on your website, can
you please explain what that is?
A Giclee, often spelled Gicl’ee, is a French word that means any print on canvas that is created through the means of a high-quality inkjet printer.
What are the advantages of printing your own
Giclees as opposed to selling prints on a commercial
site?
You get a higher percent of the profit, commercial sites often take out a commission, or they limit the amount of work you can display.
Do you also sell the originals?
Yes.
Do you think selling prints is a good business
opportunity for artists?
Yes, many people and/or businesses buy prints, because they are much more affordable.
Please tell us about your How to Paint Like Van
Gogh books.
They cover a lot of what one might think, or come to understand while the painting process unfolds. In the book, I focus a lot on layering and mixing colors, as well as light sources. The first book is more philosophical, but also has some implications for the enthusiast.
I wrote the ‘How to Paint Like Van Gogh’ books to expand creativity and education in the world – to tell my story of exploration through art.
Why did you choose to write books versus
publishing online courses?
I thought the book would reach a larger audience than an online course. I’m sure both are fine sources to tap into, and do have a video on my Youtube channel.
